The 1970s

New Atlantis Commune

During the 1970s, the village was taken over by the New Atlantis Commune of hippies. They lived without either a water supply, an electricity supply or a sewerage system. The hippies were responsible for creating great damage to The Nant as floorboards and doors were burnt, roofing slates were smashed and walls were covered with graffiti. What a sad sight this was for anyone who had special memories of the community life and the thriving quarries of The Nant. When the commune finally left The Nant, the properties were left derelict.
